Children's Book Drive for Children and Families Commission of Orange County Early Literacy Program 2011
Many of Orange County’s low-income children are not receiving the early education that they need to succeed in school. Some experts believe that for America’s poorest children, the biggest obstacle to literacy is the scarcity of books and appropriate reading material in their homes. The NAEP 1998 Reading Report Card found that students with higher reading scores were more likely to report four types of reading materials in their homes. Early Literacy Program distributes thousands of new and gently used books every month to children being served by programs that promote literacy. And every month, we fall short of the need. Brothers will host a book drive to collect books for children 5 years and under in order to help children of our community become better prepared for school, to improve their chances at becoming successful students and achieve higher education.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County 2011
Our mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that have measureable impact. Our vision is successful mentoring relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities for all. Research points to the powerful, positive, lasting impacts Bigs have on children's lives. Children with a Big Brother or Big Sister are: 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, more confident in their performance in schoolwork, and more likely to get along with their families and peers. Brothers of Sigma Delta Alpha participating in this outreach program will be making a significant impact in the lives of children who otherwise lack a male role model to guide them through difficult decisions and act as a support system socially, academically, and on a personal level.
La Semilla Learning Center 2011
La Semilla Learning Center in downtown Santa Ana, California was started in response to a need expressed by the community and a downtown congregation for their children to have help with homework and improve their academic futures. The Learning Center, in collaboration with the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana, provides a friendly after-school learning environment for elementary school students. Brothers will provide homework help as well as academic enrichment to students in grades one through five. Activities include: practicing math facts requiring use of basic addition, subtraction and multiplication, reading about various topics from a health selection of nonfiction books to inspire and enlarge their understanding of the world, and various interactions with art and music specialists.
2010 UCI Family Health Center Holiday Party in Santa Ana
Our brothers volunteered to help The Chapter 4 American Academy of Pediatrics at UCI Family Health Center Holiday Party in Santa Ana. They conducted developmental screening on children and they were expecting about 2000 low-income families to attend. They needed volunteers that were bilingual since the majority of the expected families were Spanish-speakers. Check out our gallery from the this event here.
Orange County Toy Collaborative 2010
This Toy Collaborative included the Marine Corps Reserve TOYS for TOTS, Operation Santa Claus, Firefighters Spark of Love Toy Drive, and Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The children served through this collaborative come from low-income or impoverished households. Some have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Others are homeless or are in temporary housing. Some experience serious health problems or may be physically or mentally challenged. Brothers participated in tackling the job of unloading, sorting, and packing the donated items for distribution to the local charities in order to bring joy to these children during the holidays.
Fall 2010 Soccer Match Toy Drive: UCI Sigma Delta Alpha vs. UCI Sigma Lambda Beta
In collaboration with Sigma Lambda Beta at UC Irvine we organized a Toy Drive by collecting toys from both teams in which the winner of the soccer game took home the entirety of the donated toys. These toys were delivered to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in time for the holidays.
The Children's Clinic 20th Annual Beach Walk 2010
The 5K walk was held on the Shoreline bike trail in the city of Long Beach as hundreds of participants spent their morning raising funds for the Children's Clinic and the families they serve. The goal of $150,000 will be used to provide health care visits, prescriptions, immunizations and health education classes to the thousands of uninsured children and families in the community. As staff members, brothers were able to insure a productive day by monitoring security along the bike trail and leading activities for participating children including jump rope competitions, health trivia, and other fun games.
We are always looking for ways to help our community. If you would like us to participate or volunteer at one of your events please contact our Community Representative.
